About St. Nicholas Abbey & Steam Railway
St. Nicholas Abbey is a plantation great house in Cherry Tree Hill, St. Peter, in the northern interior of Barbados. Built around 1658, it is one of three authentic Jacobean buildings remaining in the Western Hemisphere, the others being in Virginia and Suriname. The house has been in continuous occupation since the mid-17th century and remains privately owned by the Warren family, who have undertaken extensive restoration and established an artisan rum distillery on the estate.
The heritage steam railway runs through the plantation from the great house down to a stop near Cherry Tree Hill and provides a different perspective on the estate's grounds and the surrounding landscape. The railway uses a restored locomotive and carriages from Barbados's historical plantation rail network.
St. Nicholas Abbey rum is produced in small batches in copper pot stills from cane grown on the estate and is regarded as one of the finest rums made in Barbados.
