The Soup Bowl

The Soup Bowl is a powerful reef break on the east coast of Barbados at Bathsheba Beach in Saint Joseph. It produces some of the most consistent and challenging waves in the Caribbean and has hosted professional surfing competitions including the WSL Barbados Surf Pro. Spectators can watch surfers from the beach or the rocky shoreline at any time, free of charge.

About The Soup Bowl

The Soup Bowl is a reef break on the Atlantic coast at Bathsheba Beach in the parish of Saint Joseph. The name comes from the churning, foamy character of the waves as they break over the shallow reef shelf. Bathsheba itself is a small fishing village with a dramatic east coast landscape: large rounded boulders rise from the water just offshore, the coastline is lined with casuarina trees, and the Atlantic swell arrives uninterrupted from thousands of kilometres away.

The break has been the centre of Barbadian surfing since at least the 1960s and has produced a generation of nationally and internationally recognised surfers. It sits at the heart of the island's surf culture and is the reason Barbados punches well above its size in Caribbean competitive surfing.

Why Families Go

Most families come to watch rather than surf. The Soup Bowl is genuinely spectacular on a swell day, and the viewing is completely free. Surfers can be seen from the beach or the rocky outcrops along the shoreline, and the Bathsheba foreshore has picnic tables and open grassed areas where families settle in for the afternoon.

Bathsheba is also one of the more scenic stops on the east coast drive. Children respond strongly to the scale of the boulders and the power of the surf, and the village has a handful of cafes and rum shops to make a stop of it. On competition days the atmosphere at Bathsheba is electric and worth the drive from anywhere on the island.

What to Know Before You Go

The Soup Bowl is not suitable for inexperienced swimmers or surfers. The Atlantic swell is powerful, the reef is shallow, and conditions change quickly. Swimming is actively discouraged except in calm conditions and only for strong swimmers. Surfing the break is for experienced surfers only.

Spectating is free and accessible at any time. The beach is a 20-minute drive north from Bathsheba village along the ABC Highway, or about 45 minutes from Bridgetown. Bus route 2 from Bridgetown runs to Bathsheba for BDS$3.50. Parking is available along the road at Bathsheba. There are no formal facilities at the break itself but the Roundhouse Restaurant sits nearby on the cliff and is worth a stop.

The World Surf League has hosted competition events at the Soup Bowl, typically in November. Check the WSL calendar for the current year's event schedule.

Family Fit

Best as a spectating destination for families of all ages, particularly on a swell day when the waves are running. The surrounding Bathsheba area rewards the trip on its own with rock pools, beach walks, and good food nearby. Not suitable for children's swimming. Pairs well with a visit to Andromeda Botanic Gardens, which is a five-minute drive from Bathsheba.
