Harrison's Cave is a living limestone cavern system in the interior of St. Thomas, Barbados, formed over millions of years by the slow dissolution of coral limestone by acidic rainwater percolating through the rock. The cave was known to early settlers but was not systematically explored until the 1970s, when a Danish speleologist named Ole Sorensen mapped its full extent. It opened to the public in 1981 and has been one of Barbados's premier attractions ever since.
The main tour takes visitors by electric tram through the cave's principal chambers, passing stalactites and stalagmites that have grown over thousands of years, underground streams, a crystal-clear pool, and the Great Hall waterfall, which drops approximately 12 metres into a pool below. The natural temperature inside the cave is a constant cool, which provides a refreshing contrast to the heat outside.
