Dover Beach is the beach at St Lawrence Gap in Christ Church, the south coast strip with the highest concentration of restaurants, bars, and hotels on the island. The beach faces south and is wide, with warm water and reasonable sand. The south-facing aspect means it catches more swell than the reef-sheltered Accra Beach to the west, and on windy or stormy days a red flag is raised to indicate the water is not safe for swimming. On calmer days, which is most days, the conditions are fine for confident swimmers and older children.

Watersports operators offer banana boat rides, jet ski hire, and paddleboard rental directly on the sand. What to Know Before You Go

Check sea conditions before swimming. Red flag days do happen at Dover. No dedicated public car park; parking in private lots or on street in the Gap area. The beach is free to access. Watersports prices are negotiated directly with operators; agree costs before committing. The water is generally calmer in the morning than the afternoon.

Best suited to families with older children who are confident in the water. The Gap atmosphere and watersports work well for teenagers. For families with toddlers or younger children who need calm, predictable water, Accra Beach a short drive west is the better call.

Beach Safety

Check conditions before leaving home. Conditions can change quickly, especially on the east and south coasts. Choose a beach with a lifeguard on duty when possible, and obey warning flags: a red flag means the water is not safe to enter.

Never leave young children unsupervised at the water's edge or in the sea. Children should not be left in the care of other children near the water.

Watch for watersports activity in the water. Jet skis, banana boats, and paddlers use designated zones that are not always clearly visible from shore. Stay aware of what is moving in the water around you.

Manchineel trees grow along the edges of many Barbados beaches. They have small green apple-like fruit and broad leaves. Do not shelter under a manchineel tree in the rain, as water dripping from the leaves causes skin irritation. Do not touch or eat the fruit.
