Bathsheba Beach in St Joseph is the most visually distinctive beach in Barbados, defined by giant coral boulders carved by Atlantic wave action. The Soup Bowl surf break is at the southern end. The currents are strong and the beach is not for swimming. The visit is about the scenery, the boulders, and the tidal pools at the northern end.

About Bathsheba

Bathsheba is the main fishing village on the east coast of Barbados, in the parish of St. Joseph. The village sits at the base of the Scotland District, where the land rises into green hills and the Atlantic comes in hard against a coastline of large brown boulders and rock formations.

It is unlike anywhere else on the island. The west and south coasts of Barbados are calm, sheltered, and lined with reef-protected beaches suited to swimming. Bathsheba faces the open Atlantic and has the character that comes with it: dramatic, exposed, and genuinely beautiful in a way that takes a moment to settle on.

The village has a small resident population and a handful of restaurants and rum shops. The atmosphere is relaxed and local. Visitors come to walk the beach, watch the surfers, explore the rock pools, and eat at the restaurants that look out over the water.

Why Families Go

Bathsheba is a scenic destination rather than a swimming beach. The Atlantic current makes swimming unsafe along most of the shoreline. What it offers instead is some of the most arresting coastal scenery in Barbados, and a pace of life that feels further removed from the tourist circuit than anywhere else on the island.

The rock pools that form among the boulders at low tide are well suited to children who enjoy exploring. The large offshore boulder known as Bathsheba Rock is a landmark that appears in most photographs of the area.

The Soup Bowl, the surf break at the north end of Bathsheba Beach, hosts regular surf competitions and is one of the most well-known waves in the Caribbean. Watching surfers from the beach or the restaurant above is one of the better spectator activities on the island.

Joe's River Tropical Rainforest lies on the outskirts of the village, covering 85 acres of woodland including giant ficus, mahogany, and cabbage palm trees, with walking trails through the forest interior.

What to Know Before You Go

Location: Bathsheba, St. Joseph. About 40 minutes from Bridgetown on the east coast. The road through the Scotland District from the ABC Highway is one of the more scenic drives on the island.

Swimming: Not advised along Bathsheba Beach due to Atlantic currents. Rock pools at low tide are safe for paddling.

Parking: Roadside parking along the main coastal road through the village.

Eating: Several small restaurants and rum shops in the village with views of the beach. The Atlantis Historic Inn has been a fixture in Bathsheba for generations.

Bus: ZR and PSV buses run from Bridgetown to Bathsheba. Journey time approximately 45 minutes. Fare BDS$3.50.

Family Fit

Bathsheba suits families with children of any age as a scenic stop rather than a beach day. Children who swim should be kept well back from the water's edge. The rock pools, boulder scrambling, and surf watching give children enough to engage with during a 90-minute visit.

Combine with St. Nicholas Abbey, about 20 minutes north, for a full day in the eastern parishes.
